Herd Manager Coombe Farming

Job Overview

We are a diversified mixed organic estate based in South Somerset, we farm 800 dairy cows on three dairies and rear all our own replacements over 2500 acres.

A vacancy has arisen at one of our farms for a Herd Manager reporting directly to the Farm Manager. The post holder will have full responsibility for the 360 cow milking herd and young stock, as well as leading a team of 5 dedicated employees plus relief, working to the highest standards of animal welfare. A good understanding of a grazing-based system would be required and PACE Keenan feeding would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have responsibility for milking, herd health and record keeping
  • Ensure the herd stays compliant in meeting the organic and farm assurance standards
  • Ensure Health & Safety requirements are met and comply with our high standards
  • Be confident in managing and motivating the farm team through good leadership and example-setting. This will include monthly staff rotas.
  • Maintain high standards for themselves, for the farm and the team
  • Be competent in AI, foot trimming and operating farm vehicles (including telehandler)
  • Be computer literate with a sound knowledge of herd computer-based herd records. Knowledge of Uniform Agri would be an advantage
  • Keen eye for grassland management
  • Hold a full valid UK driving licence

  • PACE Keenan Feeding (preferred – but not essential)
  • Uniform Agri Software (preferred – but not essential)
  • Grazing-based System (preferred – but not essential)
  • Hold a full valid UK driving licence
  • Authorisation to work in the United Kingdom

In return the AH Warren Trust can offer you

  • A starting salary from £39,000 for a qualified Herd Manager
  • A full-time position working on a shift basis which includes weekend working, typically this will involve working 11 days per fortnight with every other weekend off (5.5 day / 55-hour week average)
  • An attractive four-bedroom detached house, located on the farm which is situated in the beautiful countryside between the local towns of Crewkerne (3 miles) and Chard (7 miles)
  • 31 days holiday pro-rata (including bank holidays), increasing to 34 days after 3 years continuous service
  • Enrolment onto our company pension scheme on completion of 3 months
